Neil Woodford was up until recently the man who made middle England rich. A star money manager that at one time could do no wrong. Of late his fortunes have changed. Since 2017 his fund has hit problem after problem with it culminating in the suspension of trading in one of the main funds he manages. Theres a couple of topics I would like to discuss. We first need to look back at his past to Phill Tomlinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16427896363273348083noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4738024787043971090.post-28202114733440951922017-09-02T20:58:00.000+01:002017-09-04T21:45:45.197+01:00Pensions
Many Governments around the world have huge pension liabilities. This is not limited to developed countries in the West but also developing countries such as China for example which has a huge ageing population and due to the one child policy of its past means the proportion of workers to retirees is set to increase. Even if economies grow as normal many of these liabilities are unplayable whichPhill Tomlinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16427896363273348083noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4738024787043971090.post-45583644940014426772017-06-08T20:44:00.001+01:002017-06-08T20:44:25.966+01:00Tory Majority - Again?
I only have time for a quick post on this before the voting closes. Despite the polls getting closer I believe the Tories will get a comfortable majority. See my 2015 post for similar reasons. After the 1945 Labour Government, Britain has never voted again for a left of centre political party. Harold Wilson and Tony Blair had to go to the right to get into power. I see no different in this Phill Tomlinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16427896363273348083noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4738024787043971090.post-42431637158812679042017-01-19T21:30:00.000+00:002017-01-19T21:32:06.891+00:00Bitcoins Stagnation
I first discovered Bitcoin back in mid 2012. Around 2014 I lost interest primarily because of the block size debate that was on-going at the time (it had begun years before 2014). I could see the community fracturing so decided to leave it alone and let it all play out. 18–24 months later I decided to revisit Bitcoin as there had been an increase of articles in the news mentioning its recent Phill Tomlinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16427896363273348083noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4738024787043971090.post-43252520482810067792017-01-16T20:46:00.004+00:002017-01-16T21:02:26.080+00:00Posts at MediumJust a quick note that I will also be posting at medium here. If you have not seen the previous posts on climate change and Germany's green energy policy then you may want to read these first. I started this series with a discussion on the arguments for and against Anthropogenic Climate Change. My view is that it is real, backed up by the majority of scientific evidence that supports the fact we are warming the planet by emitting CO2. If we accept this premise then the next question is what do we do? The first point to understand is the problem is above politics. Global Warming. The Green Energy Revolution. Pollution. Save the Planet. Climate Crisis. There's a lot of people interested in energy and the impact of climate change so I decided to write my op-ed in a series of posts with my take on the whole issue. I'm going to cover many issues, is anthropogenic climate change real? What are Governments to do? Is the world going to end? Is it a crisis? We're all Capitalists. In that I mean even people who bad mouth Capitalism, people who talk about its supposed inherent evil or how it degrades human beings; even these people don't want to abolish the market economy. They like choice and consumer sovereignty with the ability to buy goods under their own free will. Most people believe markets to be superior to Governments in producing goods and Phill Tomlinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16427896363273348083noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4738024787043971090.post-3437748862834412032016-08-09T21:40:00.000+01:002016-08-09T21:40:06.414+01:00Venezula another Socialist Humanitarian Crisis
Venezuela is the latest in a long line of Socialist failures but still people around the world keep falling for its ideology. One of creating victims, dividing society into minority groups and promising to give everyone the free and easy life for nothing.

What Crisis?
Well in case you have been living under a rock for the past few weeks you would have no doubt noticed that the Labour party are once again imploding on themselves. Brexit appeared like an opportune moment for the Parliamentary Labour Party to oust Jeremy Corbyn, their current leader. One by one his shadow cabinet resigned. It got so bad that an Englishman was appointed to a Scottish cabinet Phill Tomlinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16427896363273348083noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4738024787043971090.post-75359024439154415962016-07-06T21:54:00.001+01:002016-07-07T21:59:08.249+01:00Has the Left Lost its Way
This video is typical of how the left has lost its way over the years. There was a time when you could have a debate based on reason from both sides of the political spectrum however as this video illustrates those days are long gone. It concerns the recent march in London to protest on the recent Brexit vote, which people are quite entitled to do. With voting nearly over and with polls neck and neck its hard to call the results tonight. However I think we may be facing Brexit for a number of reasons.
Brexit voters will be more willing to turn out in the rainy weather.

One of the most talked about topics on the news at the moment is surrounding the up and coming referendum here in the UK known as Brexit. In another month the UK public will decide if they wish to be part of Europe or take power back. Current polling shows a pretty even split so its hard to call what will happen. I recently watched a program called "How to get a council house". Its not something I would usually watch but decided to, as it was on and my partner was watching it. An interesting case on the program was where a Romanian family had decided to move to the UK with little money and no job to try get a Council House. The majority of us believe we need Government to do certain jobs in order for society to function, these core jobs depend on your political beliefs. For example an ardent Socialist will state everything needs to be run by the State, food, clothes, industry and so on. Income inequality gets raised as an injustice that we must solve. Disparities in incomes are always viewed as a zero sum game in which if someone gets rich it must be the expense of someone else. I would like to take the time to discuss some of the fallacies when people look at absolute wealth and inequality in general.

I hate GDP. People think because I believe in free markets and liberty that I must worship the metric. Of course I would say the only way over the long term to keep it ticking over is with free markets but thats not a purpose or even the concern of liberty. It's also a very flawed metric in order to measure peoples increase in material wealth. Generations have always believed Socialism has all the answers to what they perceive as societies problems. It goes from bad to worse for the Labour Party. To use a mass murder as the basis for a joke is a new low; most people will be quite worried about the fact that Britain's main opposition party has become a complete joke. Moderate Labour MPs won't need to oust Corbyn and his team, at this rate they will self implode on their own accord.
